Favorite shrub in the fall? It’s gotta be the widow maker, otherwise known as the vine maple. It’s hard to miss. Fire engine red over here, school bus yellow over there. Just small bunches of them, scraggly, sprawling, eye-catching nonetheless. They hog most of the attention come October. Especially along stream banks, clearcut slopes, and raw lava beds. I think of them, in their golden to red colonies, as “Autumn Rooted Impressionists.”

Antelope, Oregon. Once dominated by the Rajneesh. Good times.
